Entertainment Ideas
March, 30 2021
Oh, hi moms and dads, we see you there, you know, just doing life and well, parenting during a pandemic. The curveball that was 2020 aaaaand the start of 2021 too for that matter…No school led to slow school starts… Are you pulling this face right now while reading this 😐 *We get it*
If there are any parents in the room who aren’t coffee drinkers – tell us your secret because currently, we’re all about that “please fill the coffee cup to the top” kind of life moment. Sigh…
No matter, we’ve put together a list of 7 Unique Kids Entertainment Ideas for when life or a pandemic throws us and you a parenting curveball.
We’re always up for some serious fun but we’re also responsible parents and tend to feel better knowing that activities are intended to teach and designed to educate – while still being super FUN!
Now you are absolutely, 100% allowed to grab a full cup of coffee (or an equivalent glass of wine) while reading our savvy Kid’s Entertainment Ideas list…
Aaaaand GO!
1. Bring the outdoors in…camping out, indoors
Yes, camping outdoors, indoors – well, it’s a real thing. A real thing that kids love no matter what lockdown level you’re currently in. It’s also a great activity for those who don’t have an outdoor play area.
If you have access to the following, you’re pretty much sorted:
- A dining room table (any table, really – tent preparation)
- A sheet or large blankets(s) – again, tent prep!
- Pillows, sleeping bags and a small backpack – camping essentials
- A torch or two – for those spooooky campfire stories (age-appropriate, of course)
- A slab of chocolate, biscuits and marshmallows (We see Smor’s in your future)
- Water bottles & mugs for hot chocolate (oh yes, don’t forget the hot chocolate moms!)
Best of all there are no messy campsite fires to worry about. And those Smor’s we were talking about -simply make those in the microwave. How we love the modern camping age.
If you’re looking for a few “campfire” games or ideas on how to build a faux campfire, have a read here, for some clever and super cute inspo!
2. Spread a little bit of happy…the Kindness Rock Project
One of the biggest trends of the past year – finding rocks (minus the paper and scissors, get it?).
Found a beautifully painted rock with a motivational message on it while at the beach? Well, lucky you! It’s a sweet little trend where one finds a rock, takes an image, and shares it on their social platforms. You (that’s you, the rock finder) is then encouraged to place it in another location for somebody else to find the happy message.
There are a few groups and pages on social platforms where you can see if anybody has found your rock. Or simply start making your own rocks for others to collect and pass on.
Moms and dads, best you start:
- Taking a few trips to the beach to collect rocks.
- Whip out the paint and get all Picasso-like!
Find out more about this kindness project taking the world by storm.
3. Enter the banana bread professionals…online baking classes
Remember those lockdown days of banana bread taking over your social feed?? Well, we do and as much as we love the stuff, darn it, we wouldn’t say no to a chocolate or vanilla cupcake instead!
So yes, the next idea on the list may be due to selfish reasons (mommy and daddy deserve nice things aka cupcakes too!). The kids will absolutely love Online Baking Classes – we suggest you start grabbing those aprons…
Why is baking such a good idea?
- Because mommy and daddy love a cupcake(s)
- A moments peace
- And of course, it’s great for learning how to measure, completing tasks, and the all important art of tidying up.
So, if you’re hoping you’re little one might be the next Zola Nene or Jamie Oliver… Best you take a look at a few online cooking classes over here.
4. Hello, wonderful edutainment paradise! Enter Wonderdal
Imagine a space created for children, incorporating a world of edu-tech entertainment, that’s safe and follows all Covid protocols (that might actually be fun for mom and dad too).
Well, Wonderdal is just the place. Situated on Hazendal Wine Estate, Wonderdal is an Interactive Edutainment Centre for kids aged between 5-13 years of age.
Wonderdal takes play seriously, it’s a magical, colourful world of creativity and learning. It’s the ideal venue for family-friendly adventures in the Winelands. Click here to book a spot for your family today.
Little ones can discover a world of science, nutrition, and nature across a variety of both indoor and outdoor activity zones with the assistance of trained Wonderpals.
We mentioned something for moms and dads too. The kids get booked in for a two-hour slot at the Edutainment Centre – which means it’s perfectly acceptable (expected) to sit back and enjoy a chilled Chardonnay or hot coffee at Babushka Deli while you wait.
5. Messy play…homemade, earth-friendly playdough
If anything is going to keep the little ones entertained for long periods of time (or enough time for you to catch up on those work emails) playdough is the solution.
As fun as the soft, dough-like play stuff is, it can sometimes be filled with far too many nasty ingredients. Instead, head to the kitchen (you’ll need those aprons again) and make your own!
What You’ll Need:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup salt
- 4 tsp cream of tartar
- 2 cups lukewarm water
- 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
- Food coloring
How To Do It:
- Combine all ingredients except the food colouring into a large bowl.
- Stir well until the mixture forms into a soft dough.
- Divide the dough into balls and colour each ball with a drop or two of food colouring. Mix well to incorporate the colour.
- Store the playdough in zip lock bags.
And of course, don’t forget rolling pins and cookie cutters! There might be a little playdough pizza-making party soon!
6. Math minds…The DIY shell memory game
If your little ones have a keen mind for all things numerical, there’s an easy way to enhance those skills at home. The DIY Shell Memory Game is an age-appropriate way for little minds to not only enhance their numeracy skills but their memory too.
What You’ll Need:
- Some shells
- A khoki pen
- A small tray
How To Do It:
- Number each shell, 1-10, and write the letter of each number on the shell too.
- Arrange the shells face down on the tray.
- One player flips a shell and leaves it face up, then flips another. If the shells match, lave them face up and the other play goes. If they don’t match, both shells are flipped back over and the game starts again.
Remember to be close by to offer words of encouragement or a little help.
7. Keep fit while having fun! Fun workouts with the Body Coach

Banana bread wasn’t the only thing that shot to stardom on social media during hard lockdown. Joe Wicks, also known as the Body Coach went viral with his home-workouts for both kids and parents. Joe is a UK based fitness instructor who made sure we all stayed fit and strong!
Joe focused on great cardio workouts that could be done in your living room, ensuring staying fit was easy while staying indoors.
The workouts are timed in 30 second – 1-minute intervals, ensuring a good overall workout. We might have just stuck to the kid’s workout throughout lockdown becaaauuuse… Those adult ones were 🥲 !
Happy Entertaining! x
