Water Day

Did you know …

65% of our bodies are made up of water?

90% of a plant structure consists of water?

Water regulates the earth’s temperature?

Millions of organisms such as plankton, baby crabs and even small worms live in a single drop of water?

A human would not be able to live without water for more than a week?

Because water is such a precious resource that gives life to our entire planet, World Water Day has been celebrated on 22 March since 1993 to raise awareness about the importance of conserving and protecting this major natural resource.

But, remember, you don’t have to wait until World Water Day to start caring about water!

Our clever little Amuki friend, Shekku, has these easy tips for saving drops
EVERY DAY 💧💧💧

  • Close the tap while you brush your teeth.
  • Let Mom or Dad know when you spot a leaking tap or burst pipe so that they can have it fixed quickly before more precious water goes to waste.
  • Collect rainwater to use for watering plants or garden veggies later.
  • Don’t dirty unnecessary dishes (Moms, you’ll thank us for this). A water bottle that you can sip from during the day is a much smarter solution than having to use a glass each time that then needs to be washed.
  • Keep showers short and sweet. About 2 minutes is perfect!

A UN initiative, the goal of World Water Day is not only to raise awareness about the life-sustaining importance of water but also to highlight the plight of millions of people still living without access to safe, clean water and to help realise the goal of supplying them with potable water.

This year, the focus falls on groundwater. Groundwater is water that is stored underground in aquifers. Aquifers are formations of rock, sand and gravel that form underground “dams” in which water is kept. In fact, almost all liquid drinking water on the planet can be found in aquifers!

These water sources, which feed our dams, rivers and seas and are pumped to the surface to grow food and much, much more are under great threat due to overuse and pollution, which is why protecting them is so important.

So, what’s to do? Well, here are 5 great ways you can help save this precious resource this World Water Day – and every other day, too – because when it comes to water, every drop counts!

5 Ways to Do Something Meaningful This World Water Day

1. Participate in the World Water Day One-Minute Challenge

This year, World Water Day activities will include a one-minute video challenge to garner awareness and support via digital platforms.

To participate, you simply need to record a 60-second video clip saying why groundwater (and water in general) is important and what can be done to protect it.

To participate, you simply need to record a 60-second video clip saying why groundwater (and water in general) is important and what can be done to protect it.

Once you’re done recording, simply upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo and send the link to mygroundwaterstory@un-igrac.org.

Don’t forget to include the hashtags #MyGroundwaterStory & #WorldWaterDay

2. Join the Wonderdal Farm Explorers and Discover the Secret Water Spots on the Estate

The Wonderdal Farm Explorers will be active on World Water Day when the club will be taking young adventures around the Hazendal estate to see the different water spots on the farm and learn more about H2O.

The outing is free to any child who has booked a 3 pm play session on the day and is fully supervised.

In fact, it might be the perfect place to shoot your One-Minute Challenge vid … #justsaying 😉

3. Save Your Leftovers

Producing food requires A LOT of water. In fact, producing a loaf of bread requires over 900 litres of water, a soda 704 litres of water and a small portion of potato fries 45 litres. And 1kg of chocolate requires a whopping 24 000 litres of water to produce.

In addition, more than 1/3 of all food produced worldwide goes to waste.

That is a lot of natural resources used unnecessarily. This is why it is super important to not waste food. You can help the planet by simply making smaller portions of food and finishing your plate or saving the leftovers for a snack later.

4. Educate Yourself and Others

A great small way to help is to increase awareness of the importance of water by simply spreading the message. Why not do so by inviting over a few pals this World Water Day, popping some corn and watching one of these amazing doccies that teaches you all about water usage, the water cycle and the importance of the oceans.

We’d say it’s a date!

You’ll love this great animation about water usage made by the UN.

Or this one about the water cycle.

Other great options include The Blue Planet: Seas of Life narrated by David Attenborough, Madagascar Where’s the Water?, Raindrop Water Adventure Toons, March of the Penguins and Arctic Tale.

5. Create a Water Diary

We oftentimes don’t realise how much of something we are using until we start to track our consumption.

By starting a water diary and noting the number of times per day you use water, for what purpose and how much (check out these handy online guides here and here that list how many litres of water is used on average per activity), you will be able to quickly ascertain where you can cut down on water use.

This is a great activity for your whole family to partake in. At the end of a week, you can share your diaries and crown your family’s water hero is!

(This printable 24-hour water diary is great for you to challenge your classmates to! Just remember to ask your teacher’s permission first.)
